Diwali: A Celebration of Family, Joy and Happiness

Diwali is one of my favourite times of the year. There’s something magical about this festival that makes the world feel softer, warmer, and more alive. The nights glow brighter, the air smells sweeter, and every small thing seems to hold a bit of magic. From the glittering diyas to the sound of laughter echoing through the corridors, Diwali has a way of wrapping everything in joy and light.
At home, the excitement begins days before the festival itself. We choose outfits to wear in front of the rangoli, plan what we cook for our dinner, and anticipate the smell of freshly made puri/poori? The house starts to feel festive long before the first diya is even lit. On the morning of Diwali, my family and I wake up early to make the rangoli- a burst of colour at our doorstep. By the end, there’s this beautiful pattern that feels like a small piece of art we created together, welcoming everyone who walks in. My mom, as always, is the heart of the preparations- coordinating the decorations, helping with the food, and making sure everything is perfect while still laughing at my messy attempts to help.
As the sun sets, we start lighting diyas all over the house. One by one, tiny flames flicker to life, and suddenly the whole place glows. There’s something peaceful about that moment- just standing quietly, watching the light spread, knowing it’s a symbol of everything good pushing away the dark. The kitchen, meanwhile, is chaotic in the best way. My aunty is flipping pooris, I’m setting the table, and my sister is sneaking sweets whenever she can. The smell of freshly baked naan and perfectly cooked chana fills the air, wrapping the house in warmth.
And then of course, comes the celebration. Every year our condo hosts a Diwali party, and it was honestly incredible. Everyone showed up in the brightest, most stunning outfits, the kind that make you feel like royalty for a night. There were lights everywhere- gold, pink, and orange - and music that made it impossible not to dance. I performed with my friends, and it was an amazing moment filled with happiness and joy. The rhythm, the cheering, the laughter made it one of those rare moments where everything felt perfectly in place.
But even beyond the parties, fireworks, and photos, Diwali means something deeper to me. It’s more than a celebration of lights; it’s a reminder of renewal. It’s about family, friendship, and that unspoken bond that grows stronger every time we come together. Diwali reminds me that even when life feels heavy or uncertain, there will always be something to look forward to- a spark, a smile, a reason to begin again. I hope all of you and your loved ones enjoy Diwali as well as any other festival that you celebrate.
