The first day of school is always a nerve wracking experience. Walking into different hallways from what you were used to, seeing new faces, and entering new classrooms that feel unfamiliar and empty.

Just this week, I had my first day of eighth grade, and to be honest, I didn’t like it. I felt out of place, like I was in some weird dream and wasn’t waking up. Classrooms that were once full of joy and happiness now felt cold and bleak. Between classes, I was slowly navigating different classrooms- more places I had no interest in exploring.

Academically, this year already feels different. Teachers expect us to come prepared, to think deeper, and to manage ourselves without being reminded at all. The homework increases, the tests get more consistent, and every grade carries the weight of the future we are inching towards. It’s as if the invisible countdown to high school has begun, and the pressure to prove ourselves lingers in the air, unspoken but understood.

Although the first week has been full of ambivalence, part of me is also excited for the opportunity to grow and take on more responsibility. Every lesson, every assignment, every painful test is going to allow me to explore my strengths, face several difficulties, and also grow in ways I wouldn’t expect. This is a year that is going to challenge me to balance nerves and excitement, independence and connection, pressure and joy.

Every moment- from the few seconds before class to the laughter in the hallways is part of this tapestry of growth. Eighth grade is an opportunity for change, a space where I can make mistakes, discover strengths I didn’t know I had, and begin to understand the kind of person I want to be. Eighth grade is going to be an exciting and stressful journey, and I hope all of you as well navigate such challenges with curiosity, resilience, and moments that make it truly unforgettable
